2021 Parkin Drawing Prize: Call for Entries

Entries for New Zealand’s most prestigious drawing competition, The Parkin Drawing Prize are now invited.

The award, founded by arts patron Chris Parkin, carries a major cash prize of $25,000, and national recognition. From approximately 500 entries, a portfolio of around 80 works is chosen by a judging panel for the annual exhibition. In addition to the premier prize of $25,000, there are another 10 highly commended prizes of $500.00. Entries are restricted to New Zealand citizens and residents.

Previous winners include Monique Jansen (2013) with AO Folded Moire Drawing ; Douglas Stichbury (2014) with Observer, Gabrielle Amodeo (2015) with The Floor We Walk On, Hannah Beehre’s Catastrophe (2016), Kirsty Lillico’s carpet installation State Block (2017),Jacqui Colley for Long Echo (2018), Michael Dell’s Every Valley (2019) and Poppy Lekner’s Forward Slash last year.

“It has certainly been a challenging year for artists who have been impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic - from the closure of galleries with the changing alert levels to the cancellation or postponement of live performances and cultural activities. Yet, it’s also been a great opportunity for artists to re-evaluate their life choices and we are seeing some incredible works with powerful messaging coming through as a result – this was apparent in last year’s exhibition.

“Artists who enter not only have a chance of winning a substantial prize,  but also have a chance of their work being hung in a month long exhibition, important exposure to both buyers, and dealers,”  said Parkin.

“It is with great pleasure that the NZ Academy of Fine Arts is once again hosting the prestigious Parkin Drawing Prize 2021. The prize through the years has imbued the highest level of artistic integrity and Chris Parkin is to be congratulated as a true patron of the arts. This show promises to be as exciting, demanding and as thoroughly enjoyable as the first Parkin Drawing Prize in 2013,” said Greg Chaston, President New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts.

Finalists will be pre-selected by the Judging Panel in June. All selections are anonymous with artist details not being made available to the Judges.

Entry forms and further information are available on www.parkinprize.nz. Entries close at 4pm on 8 June 2021 and the winner will be announced on Monday 2 August 2021 to coincide with a public exhibition showcasing all finalists’ works to be held at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts in Wellington.
