Conditions of Entry
Entries will be opening for 2021 Parkin Drawing Prize in 18 March 2021
Works not previously exhibited in a major exhibition or another art prize are eligible for entry. Only artists who are New Zealand residents or citizens are eligible to enter.
Artists may submit up to two entries of works completed in 2020 or 2021. Entries can only be submitted through the online entry form. Artists are requested to ensure all information is accurate and to check their entry data before submitting their entry.
Two photographic images of each entry can be submitted, or in the case of a video work a link can be submitted. Images must be jpegs no greater than 5MB each.
To submit a link to a video please ensure this is complete and tested prior to finalising your entry.
Artists are encouraged to submit a narrative about each work entered up to 100 words.
Works up to a maximum of 3 metres high x 3 metres wide and in the case of 3D work, 1.5 metres deep are eligible for selection.
Entries close at 4pm on Tuesday 8 June 2021. Late entries will not be accepted.
2. Selection of Works
The selection panel will have no access to information to identify the artist as far as is practical. The panel will view all entries and select approximately 70 to 80 works that will be invited into the finalists’ exhibition and from which the winner will be selected. The winner and recipients of 10 highly commended awards will be announced on Monday 2 August 2021.
The non-refundable entry fee of $40 per work ($80 for two works) can be paid by Direct Credit, Cheque or Credit Card. This entry fee is for the management of the competition and does not contribute to the competition prize money. The entry fee includes GST. A GST receipt can be issued on request to the Academy.
Payment can be made the following ways
Direct Credit into account: 06-0561-0014541-01 . Put your name in the Particulars Field, Entry No. in the Code Field and ParkinPrize in the Reference Field.
Cheques are to be made payable to the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts and posted to PO Box 25482, Wellington, 6011. (Please note cheques will not be accepted after 31 May 2021 due to changes in the banking industry.)
Credit card payment can be made by phoning the Academy on 04 499 8807, select option 1.
4. Delivery of Artworks
Artists must ensure works are well packaged in identifiable and easy to reuse packaging.
Works shortlisted for the prize are to arrive at the Academy by 4pm on 23 July 2021.
Works considered unsuitable for display will include wet artworks, those in poor condition, any which emit offensive odours, or that may deteriorate in condition.
5. Freight and insurance
Forward and return freight is the responsibility of the artist.
Insurance is the artists’ responsibility.
All transit insurance costs are to be met by the artist. The NZ Academy of Fine Arts accepts no liability for loss or damage during transit.
The NZ Academy of Fine Arts will take all reasonable care with your work(s) while at the Academy Galleries but shall not be liable under any circumstances whatsoever for damage caused to any work irrespective of how that damage is caused.
6. Labelling and Hanging
Work and packaging labels will be sent to artists whose work is shortlisted for the prize with instructions and information on how to apply these to your work and packaging.
Where applicable works must include properly attached hanging or installation devices. In the event of inappropriate or un-supplied hanging devices the Academy reserves the right to attach hanging devices to your work. Any special hanging or display instructions are to accompany the work.
Works with an electrical component must be accompanied by a current Safety Certificate from a Master Electrician. All equipment, e.g. DVD Players, TV monitors etc. must be supplied and either installed by the artist or have full and clear installation and operation instructions attached.
Installations must include full and detailed instructions to ensure the finished work replicates the entry.
If the Academy considers a work is complex to install, the artist will be requested to advise about or to arrange installation within the Academy’s prescribed timeframe.
Your work will be stored for no longer than four weeks after the closing date of the exhibition after which time a charge of $10 per week will apply for storage at the Academy's discretion. If after three months it is still unclaimed the Academy may sell the work to defray costs.
7. Judging and prizes
Prior to the exhibition opening the judge will view the shortlisted works and will select one entry for the major award of $25,000. This selection will be without access to any information which may identify the artist as far as is practical.
The winning work becomes the property of the Parkin Drawing Prize once the prize money is paid to the artist(s).
Ten highly commended prizes worth $500 each will also be awarded.
The decisions of the judge will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.
8. Results and Exhibition opening
The works selected for prizes will be announced at an official awards evening held at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts on 2 August 2021. Shortlisted artists will be given an invite for themselves plus one for this evening.
9. Sales and Commissions
All work must be for sale. Sale price includes a commission of 33.33% (GST Included), which will be deducted from the sale price on all works sold. Payment for sold works will be made after the exhibition has finished.
The Academy reserves the right to reproduce any works for catalogue or publicity purposes including use in social media and online. The entry form is evidence of the artist’s consent. Copyright remains with the artist.
11. A Note about privacy and personal information
Access to your personal information will be limited to use by the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts and the Parkin Drawing Prize organisation only. This personal information will be recorded on the Academy’s database system and cannot be accessed by any unauthorised person.
