Entries open for 2015 Parkin Drawing Prize

Artists are being urged to sharpen their pencils and enter the prestigious Parkin Drawing Prize for 2015, which attracts a major prize of $20,000.

The national drawing competition, which is into its third year, was launched by Chris Parkin, arts patron and owner of New Zealand’s only boutique art hotel – Museum Art Hotel in Wellington.

“I draw like other people bite their nails,” claimed Pablo Picasso, and The Parkin Prize will seek to capture the spirit of invention, risk and discovery that is fundamental to drawing and making art.

For the first time this year, 10 highly commended prizes  each worth $500.00 will also be introduced, providing an added incentive for artists.

The winning submission, to receive the prize of $20,000, will be selected by the judge, iconic Kiwi artist, Dick Frizzell. Finalists will be pre-selected by an Advisory Panel, members of which are currently under selection.

“The response to The Parkin Prize has so far been away beyond my expectations. We are getting an incredible amount of interest in this competition and continue to see an impressive amount of drawings, from the traditional and not so traditional, to pure abstraction and beyond.  The 2015 competition promises to raise the bar even further and I look forward to what it has in store. As a commercially successful artist Dick Frizzell should bring a new twist to the judging,” said Chris Parkin.

The competition, in association with the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, will promote excellence and innovation in drawing in all its forms (processes, materials and ideas) and aims to play an important role in fostering New Zealand drawing practice.

Entry forms and further information will soon be available on www.parkinprize.org.nz.  Entries close on June 12, 2015 and the winner will be announced on 10 August 2015 to coincide with a public exhibition showcasing all finalists’ works to be held at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts in Wellington.
