Parkin Drawing Prize – winners: Where are they now?

Michael’s work ‘Every Valley’ measuring 1.9 metres by 1.4 metres, a charcoal drawing on a prepared canvas stretcher, was chosen as the winner from an impressive 472 entries nationwide and 78 finalists at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts’ Academy Galleries.

We caught up with Michael to find out what he’s up to these days and the impact the Parkin Drawing Prize had on his life.

What are you doing now?

My time is mostly spent between drawing and painting. Currently I am working on an exhibition for later this year.

How did your Parkin win help you and your career?

I think the award has helped in many ways but providing the opportunity to have my work shown to a wider audience, as a prize winner, was really appreciated and valued. The award is widely publicised on a national level and is always well supported by artist’s submissions each year.

What did you end up spending your money on?

At the time of being awarded the Parkin Prize I was working on a public gallery show, so the prize money was such a great support for me to finish the project the following year.
