Parkin Drawing Prize People's Choice 2022....
This year's People's Choice has been won by Jordan Barnes for his work in charcoal on paper 'The Artist In Situ (The War of Art)'.
Of this work Jordan writes "Often my work is centered around a figure or portrait responding to an environment I've placed them in. In this work, I chose the artist (self portrait) in the studio. I usually render my works with high detail to capture the viewers attention, however my goal is to pull them in beneath the surface, to expose a deeper psychological narrative happening within the work. As an artist I’m trying to explore and better understand the human condition, with the hope that I’ll discover something new about the 'self'."
Jordan's drawing was also awarded a merit prize by this year's judge Felicity Milburn who observed "An epically-scaled work that benefits from a deliberate incongruity. The setting for The Artist in Situ – (The War of Art) by Jordan Barnes, with its sumptuously upholstered seat and dramatically darkened background, suggests a kind of gravitas, but it’s one that is undercut by the ordinary details of the subject’s attire – the black jeans (I’m assuming that colour), the scruffy boots, the wrinkled shirt. All the drama is concentrated in the figure’s face, but he looks off to the side and the palpable sense of internal conflict gives this work a strong psychological edge.
Jordan has been shortlisted for the Parkin Drawing Prize several times in recent years.
Congratulations.

2020 People’s Choice Winner announced
Billy Wilson – ‘Mungyo’
The winner of this year’s People’s Choice is Billy Wilson for ‘Mungyo’, a work in oil pastel on kraft paper. The work was very favourably commented on by the art loving public during the exhibition.
Billy says “Mungyo represents another experiment in my ongoing investigation of where art and architecture meet. An 11th century carved stone relief by Pisano has become the starting point for a large scale surface of dense oil pastel that achieves a material weight in the gallery space.”
This is the fourth year in a row that Billy has been selected as a Parkin Drawing Prize finalist.
Parking Drawing Prize 2020 continued
Last year’s Parkin Drawing Prize proceeded despite the COVID 19 lock down. There was no human contact during the entry or selection of finalists phases. The competition proceeded in line with our original timeline. Selection of the winner and merit recipients was able to proceed. This was irrespective of whether there were restrictions on the Academy Galleries being able to show an exhibition to the public. We regularly reviewed the situation based on Government and Ministry of Health advice. No scenario affected the entries, the close off date, or the selection of finalists and winner. The exhibition was held during August 2020.
Congratulations to the 2020 winner of the Parkin Drawing Prize

2018
Congratulations to the 2018 winner of the Parkin Drawing Prize
Jacqui Colley has been named winner for her artwork, Long Echo
Jacqui refers to her work is a response to place, a visceral reaction to events and activities around me.
Nature, the human condition, music, industrialisation and digitisation are all central themes and an entrance to my work. Long Echo is a meditation on altered nature where social and ecological systems clash.
I’ve loosely referenced aerial views from Canterbury, observing shapes; rivers which flow from the mountains to the sea, the great lakes and the few remaining wetlands. With intersecting grids, circles and lines I have mimicked the colonisation of the now mechanised land.
I was influenced by pre-european Māori rock art on the limestone cliffs at Takiroa near the Waitaki River. I visited these drawings, contemplating the information they shared for travellers; of warnings, beliefs and the locations of provisions. This inspired me to make my own indelible marks to reflect our current precarious status, by drawing and etching it into a shiny metal surface – a symbol of modernity.
